VISUAL INFORMATION DESIGN:

THE EVOLUTION OF FACEBOOK PRIVACY

This is an infographic that contains 3 information designs that tell a story about some issue of concern or debate around social media and privacy.

My infographic talks about the evolution of Facebook privacy which covers the distribution of active Facebook users worldwide by age and gender, Facebook user security habits and changes in Facebook’s default privacy settings. The distribution of Facebook users is designed in a process diagram way to show which gender is more active on Facebook. Each gender has a small chart at the side of the process diagram that shows you the amount of Facebook users by age from 18 to 55+. Then, Facebook user security is presented in a pie chart with icons on it. The changes in Facebook’s default privacy settings are designed in four glyphs from the year 2005 to 2010. My infographic is designed this way because it is easier to read and the information for the same topic is presented on one page. It also simplifies information in a visually engaging way in order to attract and inform a large audience. The audience of the infographic is for everyone because privacy is important and it helps individuals maintain their autonomy and individuality. Besides, I use basic principles of design to support the information presented and to make it easily accessible to a larger audience.

Facebook is a great service, but it hasn’t always managed it’s user data well. It restricted the visibility of a user’s personal information to just friends and “network” in the beginning. Unfortunately, the default privacy settings for a Facebook user’s personal information have become more permissive over the past couple of years. However, they have also changed the classification of your personal information several times and sometimes confuse their users. Facebook has put in a lot of effort to correlate, publish and monetize their social graph: a massive database that covers everything about you. Therefore, most people still don’t have the slightest idea of the extent that their privacy has already been invaded. Hence, the purpose of this infographic is to show and warn people what Facebook privacy is because privacy is very important, their privacy is in danger as it has a business value. Facebook profiles, including those of Page admins, may be targeted to gain access to contacts and sensitive information. It’s crucial for the security of your account that you take steps to protect your information.
